yo party dudes - I have been seriously neglecting this blog like one would a lepor. Things are changing in a big way round these parts and I can't wait to slay some fuckin fiends this year at the detroit comic con. I am also cleaning up the ol' workhorse blog and gettin rid of some dumb crap I have on here and releasing a multitude of self-published books this year. I don't know if any of my readers over here have been following my new online comic - Party Pizza - but I have been getting an awesome amount of response from it. Who knew people actually liked to read the mindless and unintelligable garbage I like to draw ? but, I'm releasing my very first, completely self published comic. 20 + pages of sheer violence, vomit, and debauchery. I'll have more info as it gets closer to the end of the month.

More to come with the passing days - and in the meantime enjoy this mini comic I drew over the weekend. Sometimes when I'm feelin especially down and fuckin out I always turn to my old comic heros to pick me up. Same goes for my buds. My friends always been there for me through thick and thin - hopefully my childish and meager attempts to capture that make all yus dirtbags remember what it was like playin ninja turtles as a kid. I know I do. so - here's the simplest form of gratitude and respect I can extend to all my buds through out all the years I been on this mortal coil. every single one of my brothers, be they blood or not, know I love ya and got your back as much as you always had mine.

here's some inks I did awhile ago right when I started inkin with a brush instead of microns. I love inking with a brush and usually do it on everything I do now, I feel like it captures the energy of line work better and all around has a lot more character. I mean I'll still bust out a 05 or 08 to work on somethin small, but usually everything is ink and brush now.

if you didn't know, dracula and frankenstein are my favorite monsters of all time.

Just to let the world know, I'm back with a whole ton of artwork to post. I have a ton of new projects to get up on here, and I'm announcing here first the future launch of my soon to be online comic, the PARTY PIZZA. it's gonna update every friday and your nana and pep pep are definitely not going to want you to read anything to do with the horrific and debaucherous adventures of the Party Pizza.

Much more coming these upcoming days, as well as a sneak peak at some of the pages I've been working on. On top of all that, I also have now started my own tee shirt/screen printing biz with my brother in arms Tom Jenkins, and together we're coming out with a line a shirts underneath the banner DUMB KIDS. Here's just something I had layin around, I always get all these ideas about huge projects I want to do and get a chunk into um and then they just end up collectin cobwebs for another day. But, I wanted to do collection of trading cards of Michigan Dirtbags, where each character would have stats as to how much of a dirtbag they are on the back. Who knows maybe someday such a wretched and disgusting idea will surface.

This dude is wearing bacon and hotdogs as a mask to cover up his face. Wearing army fatigues from 'nam - Spider Bacon's platoon in the war committed so many heinous acts that everyone figured they only had one way out, one way down for their atrocities - and that's straight into the lake of eternal fire. we're talkin HELL, amigo!

I draw way more than I post on this blog lately, but here goes this post with trying to update it with as much of my artwork as possible. Lately I've really liked all these super quick finished pieces I've been doing. Just go to work with some paint markers, sharpies, whatever I can get my slimy mitts on. If I'm chillin with my budz I usually am sketching on some random piece of junk paper, and some of um turn out pretty good.

So here's an Adventure Time piece I did - and if you haven't seen this show, you need to. It's one of the funniest cartoons I've seen in a long, long time. Bustin me up in stiches!

Beer MX Junkyard Tee

Here's a tee colab I did with my buddy Tom Jenkins, for this skate competition benefiting Clemente Skate Park - the event is called "Beer MX" and i guess during the comp riders have to chug a beer before they land a trick for it to count. Immediatly when I heard about this I had to be a part of this event somehow, even if it was just chugging beers on the sideline listening to at the gates. Fortuneatly, I got to be a little more creative in my contribution and spun up this unholy mess. Check out my boy Tom's work, his work crushes guts and makes moms cry.

I don't get to do a ton of hand written text, but I have become a huge fan of it. I find myself not buying tee designs if I can tell what font someone used on it, unless of course the font is old english cause old english is METAL and anything even remotely evil I buy.

*Special thanks goes out to season 5 of TMNT the animated series (from the 90s, sucka!) - of which I watched while I inked this up. Probably the biggest inspiration in not only the piece but also my life in general was an episode where Casey Jones had to get a job, but when he went into the interview with a suit and tie on, he was still wearing his mask and bag of weapons. And only after he became enraged at his lack of work experience, causing him to smash the table with a bat, did he get the job.

Here's some line work I did for a racing tee my buddy is doing.

I thought the drawing turned out pretty sweet, and the actual racer does have a skull painted helmet, which totally rulz. I actually was like "can I draw a skull helmet" and he was like "yea the dude races with one". The universe is in alignment for evil today!

I'll post the final product once it gets done with all the text and everything.

Color Ink Book Feature (Issue 8)

Here's the cover for the interview and feature I'll be having for the upcoming release of Color Ink Book: The DIY art periodical - I kindly was asked to be a part of this totally sick publication which have featured the likes of Jim Mahfoood, Pale Horse Design, Skinner, as well as a TON of other super righteous artists whom I have the honor of being represented next to. I'm not positive when the next issue comes out, but when it does I have a 10-16 page feature as well as an interview on their site. I'll have more info as it comes up, but do yourself a favor and check out all of the unholy works of horrifying gore that lay in the pages of this awesome book.

Tee design for detroit based clothing company BLOOD WORKS, the project is still pre-launch so it's all still in development, and I'll be doing at least three more designs for these dudes. All tees are centered around socially conscious material - this one about "seitan" - which is a meat substitute for vegetarians - but since seitan is spelled dangerously close to the dark lord, Satan - this is a play on words for that. Spooky wizards and evil tofu!

It comes around every so often - when two words are combined they make something so radical I can't not draw it. Today - while lumbering over my usual morning cup of joe, surfin my usual sites I plug onto everyday, I noticed an entry for Warhammer Space Wolves.

Space Wolves.

No matter what would come up in a google search, it HAS to be dope. Space wolves? I mean come on. A. Outer space is awesome. B. Wolves are awesome. Add A and B and, the result can only be an epic monument of pure radicallity. None the less, did this sketch after the Warhammer miniatures who bare the unholy combining of Space Wolves into a group of what appears to be bearded men in giant robot armor, with blood stained claws. I've always loved the character design on everything warhammer - but never played the game. I doubt I'd have time, or even find someone to play with - cause I feel like I'd just make my characters the most unstoppable force in any fathomable galaxy. Talking 'bout 400 sided dice, bitch. That's what I role.

Here's a sketch that got away from me, and ended up inking the whole thing to take a little break from some work I've been up to lately. These two dudes are from Mesmo Delivery, a graphic novel by Brazilian artist Rafael Grampa - and if you've never heard of him, please check his incredibly dope artwork out, I can't get enough of it. He recently stared a fan art blog, and I'm gonna color this ugly mother up and send it his way.

Just got a hold of a couple new brush pens, and I got to say, they are boosting my turn around rate a ton. I did this in about an hour, from pencils to finished inks. I like the looseness of a brush, and it makes dragging big lines easy. Then I'll go in and tighten some stuff up with microns. I don't know if anyone can tell much of a difference (mainly the face is where I used the tandem brush/pen technique, hittin the outlines hard with brush, like creases in the cheeks, being quick with the hair, shit like that). I really dig doing inks this way, because it doesn't change how I underlay my pencils.

As a side note: I am obsessed with Garth Ennis' "Punisher MAX" series. I CANNOT get enough of the series, and I feel like this is THE BEST punisher I have ever read. It's too violent to ever be made into a movie, to horrific and gruesome to ever be anything but a graphic novel. Hail Garth Ennis for creating and continuing to still write one of my favorite books of all time.

Remember when I said I drew a bunch of zombies for Zombie week? well - I just got my grimy mitts on a sick new kodak scanner (thanks to a very generous relative) and couldn't be happier. Now I can scan in every little stroke of ink my heart desires at any time of the day. I could even be scanning this right before I head out to usher in the new year with one of my best friends, PBR - which, I am. So happy new year to all, so good to see a bunch of new followers on my blog and thanks for all who have supported WORKHORSE this year as well as all the others. I will continue to try and create art to the best of my ability. You can always count on me to keep up on slittin throats and smashin skulls in the comic world, so here's a mighty elk antler full of mead held high - cheers to the ancient gods that be and cheers to a new year. Here's something I had just chillin in my sketchbook - sometimes I'll have little projects on the side I'll work on/ink a little bit everyday as sort of a warm up before I do freelance work or whatever I'm currently working on. This is Warwick Johnson Cadwell's character "the nun with two guns" - he's an indie comic artist from the UK and I can't get enough of his work. Awesome character designs and super awesome style to everything he does. Do yourself a favor and check out some of his unholy wrath.

Here's the new Hunab Ku myspace design that's going to be launching, alongside new tracks and tee shirts (designed by yours truly), near the end of the month. I'm really excited and honored to be able to personally take the sound of a band and express it with art. The text like "message, add to friends" will probably be changed to fit the layout better, like a "merch" link and what not, but for now the text just sort of acts as a space blocker.

Yo ghouls and ghosts! Just a little shy a halloween posting this, but if you where in the detroit area for all demon's eve you woulda been able to see this hot swag slittin some throats and makin nightmares for the weak. My good buddy Nick Moore has a sick little tee business just budding and I had the honor of doing up something sick for him. I posted the work a little while back, but here the tee is live in the re-animated flesh. I assume it's Nick modeling the tee, with the pumpkin head, but it could be any number of his loyal minions.

Concert poster I did for my buddy Jake's band, Scubadog.

They were playing a show on Halloween night, and although I was on the guest list, I just couldn't drag my sick, decaying body out of bed to go see it. For the last week I was pretty much out of commission, laying around the crib sick as all mother F with h1n1: or "swine flu", as the kid's be callin it these days. I did manage to do some drawing in a fever induced haze, which I'll be throwing up onto a screen near you soon as I can get my grimy mitts to save the files to my comp and post them.

In other news, HELL, Michigan is deep on it's way to being born, once more, for the 3rd time. I'm rounding out the pencils for the first story, and just to establish the direction I'm going with it artistically - I did some ink work on the first page, and personally - I think it's lookin pretty fresh. This story is, for a lack of a better thing to say, taking me a long time. I can say with full confidence, that I am truly giving it the time it needs, and can see the artwork and characters growing on their own as I keep giving this project time to breathe and have life and limbs. It's a hard road to walk, working during the day, doing freelance - and then squeezing in time to work on my own comic. But - fear not. Cause, if it bleeds, we can kill it. And I've made one helluva gaping, bleeding, infected wound on the beast.

Also - keep up on my blog for the next week or two, I'm trying to push myself to update it for two weeks straight, everyday. Whether it be works in progress, finished pieces, sketches, or just a picture of my blowing chunks all over a piece of bristol for lack of an idea - it'll be up on this blog. So to all my loyal followers, though low your numbers may be, cheers to cashin checks and snappin necks.

Here's another page of HELL, Michigan I had scanned last week. Bear trudgin' tru da forest looking for the band, "Throne of Bilial" - of which are frozen to death in the forest after having tampered with darkness beyond their control.

Here's to trying to update this blog everyday, with EVERYTHING in my life that includes art, like music that is inspiring me at the minute and what I've been into as of late. Fear not - because I am diligently at work on HELL, MI - of which I'll post some pics of tomorrow. But for now - working on a poster for a local band down here in Athens called 'ScubaDog' - of which my homie Jake is in. So here's what I got - sittin on my desktop, going on at my spot. Madballs reference, shaggy ass dogs, and the new Converge album.

I walked in the minute the record store out here opened up, and bought that son of a bitch. And let me say, that Converge has cemented a place in my heart for all years to come. I recently started listening to um back a few years ago after my buddy kyle fell in love with um. I am in absolute love with this band, and support all they have done through out their entire career. The fact that a band could basically survive on its own underground name since '91 and remain this dedicated to being the hardest, throat slitting, murderers of metal mayhem I have ever had the pleasure to both listen to and witness. I met Jacob Bannon once, after a show at the orbit room back in Grand Rapids. He was selling his own merch, at his own table, and was the nicest dude you could ever meet. An incredible front man still supporting the goodness and righteousness of fighting for your own cause and passions.

Hats off to Converge for making my day - dark horse ride.

Also - as a side note, Zombieland was one of the best movies I've seen all year.

Here's the pencils to page one of HELL, Michigan. I'm not 100% positive what I'm calling the story yet - but fear not, I'm diligently working on fitting the words "rat guts" into the title somehow. This is usually how far I'll take pencils before I ink them - and this is pretty tight for how I sometimes leave the lines before doing ink. I'm so stoked to finally get to ink these, once I finish up penciling the rest of the story. I usually pencil a page, then immediately ink it. Then move onto the second. But lately - I've found that just penciling through a story, then going back to ink all of them at once, is not a bad way to work. I feel like I move faster and have a freeness and looseness with the lines without feeling like "what - don't draw something like that you got to ink it", looming over my shoulder.

Graveyard Planet

Here's some line work I did for a comic I had thought about doing over the summer. It was going to be called "Graveyard Planet" and it was going to comprised of several short stories, of which, involved pizza soldiers and a death match between monsters driving monster trucks. It was sort of in the vein of "Tales From The Crypt" - in which Graveyard Planet (who was the narrator) would take you through various caverns that were dug into his skull, which was a giant planet hovering through space.

Back at updating my blog a hell of a lot more than I had been over the summer. A long dormant project has sort of sprung up in my life again and I'm on the war path to get the first entire issue of my own written, inked, and colored book - HELL, Michigan. Here's a lineup of the main dudes in the first little story I'm working on. Rather than work in a set amount of issues, these are all short stories that are all about most vile, disgusting rot hole of a metal venue in the ever frozen Michiganian tundra.

Yo kiddies!

I know it's been a little while since I've been active on this blog, but I have been in the midst of doing a lot of artwork here and there and everywhere else. For the last week I went back home to the beloved mitten and participated in Grand Rapids, MI very own Artprize - which is the world's largest art prize to have ever been given out. The Devos family sprung 250,000 clams for the winner, so I thought I'd try to get my greasy mitts on some a dat loot.

Here's some shots of the work I did - yet to be hung, but all finished up and dipped in butter. I rarely show my ugly mug on my blog, but just to give you a sense of scale your good ol' favorite dirtbag is standing around in a couple shots. So - this is my piece, and I worked diligently alongside six other extremely talented artists and close friends. I came up with my concept on the seven hour drive up from Athens, and I thought "you know what's dope? motorcycles. And you know what else is sweet? People riding them into a sea of monsters." So here's what begat out of that tainted and evil seed, and before you is the wretched tree it became.

Almost as tall as yours truly. It stands, all put together, at about 8 feet.

I haven't been posting as much as I would like lately, but to break myself out of the rut I had been in, I sat down with a piece of bristol and just drew a circle in the middle of it - and just started adding random junk to it. Before long I kind of felt like I was drawing those dope ass toys in the 90s called "Madballs" - of which I am a huge fan. I stumbled across the Madballs blog, of which 90s nostalgia flowed into my brain like the ooze once did over four young turtles who became my heroes. Do yourself a favor and contemplate the question, "how where these ever marketed to children" and then allow yourself to bask in the glory that they were. Oh the radness of all things the 1990s bring to my rotten brain.

Heavy Equipment (heavy metal!)

Did these heavy equipment character sketches for a proposed kids book job I'm very excited about - an artist hasn't been chosen for the book yet and the author is still in the choosing process. So here's just a couple rough ideas for a how the characters would look, and sort of testing the water with colors and shapes and face structure - all the good stuff.

Did these little "heavy metal" cars (heavy equipment, heavy metal, get it? yuck yuck yuck) all in flash. I really like the looseness that program gives me - and it isn't a direct translation with a wacom tablet like penciling - but the smoothness, auto adjust feature lets me be pretty sloppy (sloppy for me I guess, usually I labor over line work tediously). I like the buttery feeling of just throwing some shapes down then building on top of that. I think using the program has really given some of my under drawing a lot of character

Heres a warm up sketch I ended up splashing some water color on. I haven't used water color in probably, like three years but would definitely use it again. I wasn't used to the brush strokes quite yet - and this didn't turn out like I intended but still - I think the simple shading on the faces works well. I'd love to do a whole book in black and white, with gray tone washes over everything. I think it makes everything look gloomy and rainy.

I recently made a profile over at ifreelance.com - in an effort to make some extra bones, and have been going through the catacombs of my artwork. I found this sitting around on my hard drive, and realized I had never done anything with it. I re-stumbled across this green, floating monkey and remember I had originally planned on coming out with a joke "philosophy" comic where King Cupcakes was the first space chimp sent into outer space, and when the shuttle exploded, King Cupcakes was not killed as it appeared. Ol' green faced, green butted King Cupcakes was transported to a realm inhabited by peaceful robots who had achieved mechanical nirvana - and because Cupcakes (not king yet) was the only living organism in their universe, the droids made him King and followed his words like a religion. I was going to write short poems about live and death and eating bananas and record them in a tomb of knowledge that King Cupcakes had written so his words and ideas could live on forever in the whirling and beeping insides of his robotic followers.

I did this sketch in flash - and have actually been doing a lot of rough sketching in that program lately because it saves on paper and is a lot quicker. I have tried, and tried, and tried, to make a jump to using all digital but I feel like... there's just this disconnection between my hands and the wacom tablet, when doing linework, that I can't get over. I have absolutely nothing against doing things all digitally - many, many of my friends only use photoshop, flash, or manga studio to do linework and the results are amazing. But for me - I have to go with what gives me the best results - which is still that old skool pencil and inks.

TMNT casey and raph madness!

Remember awhile back when I had posted that Raphael and Casey Jones? Well - those had some backing. Like in my last post, me and my brother in arms Zac Gorman, of the infamous online web comic Montgrave, teamed up and tried to write a three page story for one of our most beloved childhood heroes the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. So - we essentially, drank a ton of mountain dew during phone calls, ate a ton of pizza - and cranked out a loose story and plot featuring Casey Jones and Raphael. Me and Zac did these as sort of a "practice run" on how we wanted to work with each other. Zac pretty much wrote the script, with ideas and characters sprinkled in by yours truly - then the mighty Zac-maestro did the rough layouts for the pages and I took it from there and changed some of the camera shots, added my touch on backgrounds and characters - and handled the pencils and inks.

Sort of using this as a stepping stone, we are now currently working on a title we are calling "The Odyssey of Til" - which we are working together basically in the same vein. So in the meantime, check these pages and let me know if you even remember the bad guy we pulled out in the second page (and yes, he IS a real TMNT baddie).

Mighty Warrior Bal

Hey Kiddies!

Sorry it's been so long since I've had time to write out a post in a while, I recently moved from my wretched place of origin into a mighty new realm of graveyards and skulls - and I've been infecting the world from my new studio one day at a time. But - anyway - here's something I put a lot of time into - a character design for a whole new comic series me with another exceptionally talented dude by the name of Zac "take no prisoners" Gorman. This comic, I can honestly say, is what I was meant to do with my life. I feel like - I SHOULD say, comics are my life. I dunno if, I have ever felt more ambitious, more amazing, and more gun ho about what I'm doing right now. It's the kind of feeling that makes me want to puke and paint elk's blood on my face and challenge anyone I see on the street to a bare knuckle boxing match because I have all of these sweltering emotions ravaging my brain and guts constantly all day - and I want to push all that onto paper.

So here's the start of posting for something that hopefully rocks this fucking world all the way down to the lowest depths of Hell - and when it finally gets all the way down there, that big red mofo sits up out of his lazy boy and says "damn - this kid sure means biznaaaassss"
